SYMPTOMS
========

When you use the Replace command to find character and/or paragraph
formatting, Word incorrectly changes the format of text that does not match
the Find criteria if all of the following conditions are met:

1. You are searching for character/paragraph formatting using the
   Replace command.

2. Text that matches the character/paragraph format searched for is
   flagged in a table cell.

3. You choose Replace (not Replace All) to replace the text flagged in the
   table cell.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh
version 5.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information
here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND
==========

Use the Replace All command, not Replace, to change character or paragraph
formatting in the document. If it is necessary to find and change
formatting in only part of the document, follow these steps:

1. Select the section of the document you want to perform the Find/Replace
   on.

2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

3. In a new document, choose Paste from the Edit menu.

4. Perform the Find/Replace, using Replace All instead of Replace.

5. Select the text and choose Copy from the Edit menu.

6. Close the document. When Word asks if you want to save changes, choose
   No.

7. The originally selected section should still be selected. To replace
   it with the modified text, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
