SYMPTOMS
========

In Microsoft Project, if you turn off the Round Bars To Whole Days
option in the Layout dialog box for Gantt bars, there appears to be
available working time left on the Gantt chart timescale, even if the
task is scheduled for a full working day.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.

CAUSE
=====

When you turn off the Round Bars To Whole Days option for Gantt bars,
nonworking time is still displayed to the nearest whole minor timescale
unit on the Gantt Chart. For example, if working time is scheduled from
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and you display the time scale with two-hour
increments, nonworking time appears from 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM. The Gantt bar
for a one day task appears from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM as scheduled. This
results in a one hour gap between the end of the Gantt bar, 5:00 PM, to the
start of the nonworking time, 6:00 PM on the Gantt chart.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Round Bars To Whole Days option in the Layout dialog box controls
how a Gantt bar is displayed for a task with a duration shorter than
the minor timescale unit. When you clear this check box, and the
minor timescale unit is shorter than one day, the Gantt bar is
rounded to the minor timescale unit. When you select this check box,
gaps between the end of one Gantt bar and the beginning of another do
not appear. However, gaps may still appear between the end of one
Gantt bar and the beginning of nonworking time.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior
---------------------------

1. In a new project, choose Gantt Chart from the View menu. Enter a task,
   T1, with 1d duration.

2. From the Format menu, choose Layout. Clear the Round Bars To Whole Days
   check box and choose OK.

3. On the Standard Toolbar, click the Zoom In button two times or until the
   minor timescale is in two-hour increments.

Note that the Gantt bar for working time extends to 5:00 PM, but the
nonworking time begins exactly at 6:00 PM, leaving one hour of time that
appears to be available working time.
