SYMPTOMS
========
 
In Microsoft Project, when you create an interactive filter using the
Within or Not Within test, and you include an empty string in the Value(s)
field, or you include a space following the separator character in the
Value(s) field, you receive the following error message:
 
   Entry in Value(s) field is not valid
 
WORKAROUND
==========
 
To avoid receiving the error message above when you create an interactive
filter using the Within or Not Within test, do the following:
 
 - Do not put a space after the separator character in the Value(s) field.
 
   -and-
 
 - Do not use a blank string in the Value(s) field.
 
Example 1
--------
 
The following causes an error message:
 
   Name Within "First"?, "Last"?
 
The following does not cause an error message:
 
   Name Within "First"?,"Last"?
 
Example 2
--------
 
The following causes an error message:
 
   Name Within ""?,""?
 
The following does not cause an error message:
 
   Name Within "First"?,"Last"?

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft
products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching
this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
 
MORE INFORMATION

Note that when you create an interactive filter using different test
types, such as Equals or Greater, you do not receive an error message
if you use an empty string in the Value(s) field.
 
Steps to Reproduce Behavior in Microsoft Project 4.0
----------------------------------------------------
 
1. In a new project, choose Filtered For from the Tools menu, and then
   choose More Filters.
 
2. In the More Filters dialog box, choose New. In the Field Name column,
   type "Name" (without the quotation marks). In the Test column, type
   "Within" (without the quotation marks). In the Value(s) column, type
   ""?,""? (with the quotation marks) and choose OK.
 
You receive the following error message:
 
   Entry in Value(s) field is not valid.
