SUMMARY
=======

This article describes how to import Quicken version 3.0 for Windows data
files into Microsoft Money version 3.0 and Money version 4.0 for Windows
95.

NOTE: Money 99, 98 and 5.0 have a Quicken Import Wizard which simplifies
the process, but you can also use the procedure described in this article.

MORE INFORMATION
================

To import Quicken files into Money, follow these steps:

Quicken 3.0 for Windows
-----------------------

1. Run Quicken.

2. On the File menu, click Export.

3. In the QIF File To Export box, enter a name and path for the QIF
File you are exporting. (NOTE: You may want to give the file a
similar name to the account you are exporting.)

4. In the Quicken Account To Export box, select the account you want
   to export.

5. Under Export Items, select the information you want exported with the
   file.

You can include the following information in your export file:

    - Transactions
    - Account list
    - Category list
    - Memorized transactions

6. When you are finished, click OK.

7. Repeat steps 2-6 to export the remaining accounts in your Quicken
   file.

NOTE: You will have to create one QIF file for each account in
Quicken. For example, if you have a Bank Account, a Credit Card
Account, and an Investment Account, you need to make three separate
QIF files.

To import a Quicken account into Money, follow these steps:

1. Create a new file in Microsoft Money.

2. On the File menu, click Import.

3. In the Import dialog box, select the QIF files you want to import.
Use the appropriate method for your version of Money.

   Money 3.0:

To quickly select all of the QIF files in the list, click Select All.

   Money 4.0 and Later:

You must manually select all QIF files to import (there isn't a
Select All button). To select more than one file, press and hold
down CTRL while you click the files. The Help button in the
Import dialog box includes step-by-step instructions. Click OK.

NOTE: It is important to import all of the investment accounts
first. If you export all of the .QIF files at one time, Money will
be unable to create the Associated Investment Cash Accounts.

Also, if you import accounts one at a time, Money duplicates
transferred transactions between the imported accounts.

4. Money will now prompt you to assign the information to the
appropriate accounts. If the account is not listed in the box,
click Create and Money will add it to the file.

5. Money will finish importing the QIF file and then automatically
start processing the next QIF file. Repeat step 5 for each QIF
   file you are importing.

NOTE: It is extremely important that you read each import dialog box
screen Money displays. These dialog boxes tell you what information
you are importing and where you are assigning the information in Money.

Information About Importing Investment Accounts
-----------------------------------------------

 - This is a two-step process. Money will create an associated cash
account and the investment account. When Money is importing the
information associated with the cash account, it will give you the
option of assigning that information to Cash: <investment name>.
When Money is importing the actual investment information (for
example, 100 shares of MSFT stock at $80.00/share), it will give you
the opportunity to create the investment account and enter the
investment information such as the stock symbol, tax status, and
   comments.

 - The stock symbols, contact person, phone number, account numbers,
and so on do not transfer from the Quicken file.

 - Not all of the investment options transfer correctly from Quicken.
For example, Money does not have a Reinvest Long term Capital Gains
option like Quicken. If the investment refers to an investment
option that does not exist in Money, the following information will
   be entered into that field:

      Imported information was incorrect

 - When importing investment accounts, you will be asked for all
information on your investments again, such as par value for bonds,
and symbol for stocks. All information in the Investment list must
   be re-entered.

Other Issues
------------

The following information does not transfer from Quicken:

 - Loans Accounts
 - Payee lists
 - Payee addresses

Money has a limit of 253 categories and subcategories. You may reach
the category limit while importing your Quicken accounts.
