The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

The space between newspaper columns may revert to 0 inches when you open a
document that has been saved using Word's Mac Word 3.x file converter. This
problem occurs if the converted document's Space Between Columns setting
was set originally to 0.5 inch (0.5"). (To locate this setting, click
Section on the Format menu.)

WORKAROUND
==========

Set the Space Between Columns measurement to a measurement other than 0.5
inches. By setting the measurement to a different amount, the Space Between
Columns measurement will not revert to 0 inches.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 5.0 and 5.1
for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new
information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
