SYMPTOMS
========

In Microsoft Project version 4.0, when you sort your tasks or resources by
a field other than ID, the sorted item will be permanently renumbered with
an ID number based on the order after the sort.

CAUSE
=====

In Microsoft Project, renumbering is controlled by the Permanently Renumber
check box in the Sort dialog box (this check box is selected by default).

If the Keep Outline Structure check box is cleared, the Permanently
Renumber option will be unavailable (dimmed).

WORKAROUNDS
===========

To work around this situation, do either of the following.

If you want to sort and not have your tasks renumbered:

1. From the Tools menu, choose Sort, and then choose Sort By.

2. Clear the Permanently Renumber check box.

3. Choose the fields you want to sort by, and choose the SORT button.

NOTE: The Permanently Renumber option is a global setting, so when you
disable it, it will be disabled for any project you sort unless you choose
the RESET button or enable it again manually.

-or-

If you have already sorted your project, and your tasks are renumbered, you
can choose the Undo Sort command on the Edit menu; choosing this command
will return your tasks to the original order. Note, however, that you must
choose the Undo command before you use any other command (if you use
another command, the Undo Sort command may not be available).

MORE INFORMATION
===============

In Microsoft Project version 3.x this functionality is different. In
version 3.x, sorts are not renumbered by default, although you could
renumber a sort by choosing the RENUMBER button in the Sort dialog
box. As in version 4.0, this option is unavailable if the Keep Outline
Structure check box is cleared.
