---------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 2.x
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When opening a blank presentation or starting PowerPoint, you may receive
one of the following warning messages:

   PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows
   --------------------------
   This presentation is from a previous version of PowerPoint. If you
   save it, it will be updated to the current version.

   PowerPoint 3.0 for Windows
   --------------------------
   'DEFAULT.PPT':
   This presentation is from a previous version of PowerPoint. It will
   be updated to the current version and opened as an untitled copy.

   PowerPoint 2.0 for the Macintosh
   --------------------------------
   This presentation is from a previous version of PowerPoint. If you
   open it and then save, it will be updated to the new version.

CAUSE
=====

A default presentation is used when you start a new, blank presentation
in PowerPoint. If the default presentation is from a previous version of
PowerPoint, some versions of PowerPoint will give you a warning message.

The default presentation for PowerPoint for Windows is "DEFAULT.PPT",
without the quotation marks.

The default presentation for PowerPoint 2.0 for the Macintosh is "Default
Format", without the quotation marks.

RESOLUTION
==========

To eliminate the message, you can either delete the default presentation
file or convert it to the current version by opening it up and saving it
out using the same name, replacing the older format file. For example:

1. Start up PowerPoint.

2. When you get the warning message choose to open up the file even though
   it is from an earlier version of PowerPoint.

3. Without making any changes, save the presentation to the same directory
   (Windows) or folder (Macintosh) as the current default presentation and
   give it the same file name so that it overwrites the older format file.

Now when a blank presentation is opened in PowerPoint 4.0, the warning
message will be gone.
