SYMPTOMS
========
If you manually format text that has a heading style applied or you modify
one of Word's Heading styles, unexpected formatting changes to the table of
contents may result. (This behavior does not occur in Word 2.x for
Windows.) For example, if you change the Heading 1 style to All Caps, and
then update the TOC field, all the first-level headings in the table of
contents will appear in all caps, even though the TOC1 style does not
specify All Caps formatting.
The character formats that will exhibit this effect are all caps, bold,
italics, underline, double underline, dotted underline, small caps, and
strikethrough.

CAUSE
=====
Word incorrectly applies direct formatting and Heading style modifications
to the TOC styles when the table of contents is built.

STATUS
======
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND
==========
If a you do not want to accept the reformatting that was applied from the
heading style changes, do one of the following:

Method 1: Select the table of contents and press CTRL+SPACEBAR to force
          Word to revert to the built-in TOC heading styles. Do not update
          the entire table of contents, as this will cause any changes to
          the Heading styles to be reapplied to the table of contents text.
          Be sure you clear the Update Fields check box before printing the
          document, or the TOC field will be automatically updated. (To
          change this option, choose Options from the Tools menu. Select
          the Print tab, and under Printing Options, clear Update Fields.)
          NOTE: This method works in all cases of direct formatting or
          style redefinition, EXCEPT when all caps formatting is applied.

Method 2: If the table of contents is finalized, select the table of
          contents and press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 to unlink the TOC field and
          cause the TOC results to become normal text. (Note: Once the TOC
          field is unlinked, it becomes normal text instead of a field and
          you will not be able to update it.) Select the text to manually
          apply any formatting changes you want. Note that reapplying the
          appropriate TOC styles will not correct the formatting changes.
