SYMPTOMS
========

When you run the Word 2.x online tutorial, characters appear truncated or
missing.

CAUSE
=====

The 8514 system screen fonts do not match the video driver resolution
settings.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 2.x for Windows where
8514 system screen fonts are installed and the display in Windows setup is
another resolution, such as VGA. We are researching this problem and will
post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Method 1: Reinstall the 8514 display driver:

          a. Open the Windows Setup icon in the Main Group. From the
             Options menu, choose Change System Settings. In the display
             drivers list, select the 8514 display driver, and choose OK .

          b. When the driver is installed, choose the Restart Windows
             button.

Method 2: Replace the 8514 system fonts with standard VGA resolution fonts:

          a. Open Control Panel (normally, this is found in the Main Group
             of your Windows 3.1 Program Manager). Select Fonts. In the
             Fonts dialog box, select the fonts you want to remove [for
             example, "Courier 10,12,15 (8514 res)"] and choose the Remove
             button. In the Remove Font dialog box, clear the Delete Font
             File From Disk check box; choose the Yes button.

          b. After removing the 8514 screen fonts, add the standard VGA
             resolution fonts. In the Fonts dialog box, choose the Add
             button. In the Add Fonts dialog box, select the drive and
             directory where your fonts are located (usually
             C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM). When the fonts appear in the List Of
             Fonts box, select the fonts you want to install [for example,
             "Courier 10,12,15 (vga res)"] and choose OK. Close the Fonts
             dialog box.
