 - Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0, 3.0a and 3.0b

SYMPTOMS
========

When you run Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0 on a computer running
Microsoft At Work Fax, the computer may stop responding (hang).

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Works for Windows 3.0a or later, or
install the updated Microsoft At Work Fax drivers and add the following
lines to the Win.ini file:

   [PCFaxCompatibility]
   MSWORKS=1

The updated AWFax drivers are available in the Wg0992.exe file in the
Microsoft Software Library. The Wg0992.exe file is available as a free
download from the following Microsoft FTP site:

   ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/wg0992.exe

After you download the Wg0992.exe file, run it in an empty directory to
extract the files it contains, and then follow the instructions in the
Readme.txt file to install the update.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Microsoft's At Work Fax program allows you to send a Fax to another machine
from the Word Processor, Spreadsheet, and Database modules in Works for
Windows.

To send a fax
-------------

1. Either choose Send from the File menu, or choose Print from the File
   menu and print to the AWFax printer driver. This will start the
   installed Mail service.

2. To send the fax, a fax number needs to be entered in the To: line in the
   following format

      [fax:<number>]

   where <number> is the fax number for the device receiving the
   information.

AWFax hangs Works 3.0 because AWFax tries to start a second instance of the
Works program, which causes the system to hang. Works versions 3.0a and
later for Windows correct this problem by adding the following lines to the
WIN.INI file:

   [PCFaxCompatibility]
   MSWORKS=1

This information can be added to the WIN.INI file to allow Works 3.0
to work with the updated AWFax drivers.

AWFax is currently only available under Windows for Workgroups 3.11.

If AWFax is not installed, the only way to fax directly from Works is to
install a driver from a third-party that supports fax capability using a
printer driver. WinFAX is one example.
