SYMPTOMS
========

If you have a PowerPoint file created in version 3.0 with links to an
Excel 5.0 worksheet, the links may not be automatically updated when
the file is opened in PowerPoint version 4.0.

This article discusses the symptoms related to the problem, and the steps
to update links in PowerPoint 4.0.

RESOLUTION
==========

To update the links:

1. From the Edit menu, choose Linked Worksheet Object, and select
   Convert.

2. In the convert dialog box, select Convert To: Object Type -
   Microsoft Excel 5.0 Worksheet.

3. Select the Display As Icon box.

4. Choose OK.

5. From the Edit menu, choose Linked Worksheet Object, and select
   Convert.

6. Clear the Display As Icon check box.

7. Choose OK.

Note that you must follow this procedure for every link defined as a Linked
Worksheet Object in PowerPoint 4.0. For example, if there are 10 linked
worksheet objects in one slide, you will have to convert each linked
worksheet object.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE PROBLEM
==========================

 1. Open an Excel 5.0 worksheet and create a simple datafile. Save
    the file.

 2. Select a row of cells and choose Copy from the Edit menu.

 3. Open PowerPoint 3.0 and choose Paste Special from the Edit menu.

 4. Choose the Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object as the Data Type and
    select Paste Link.

 5. With Excel 5.0 still open, switch to the worksheet and make some
    changes. Press ENTER in Excel 5.0.

 6. Switch to PowerPoint 3.0 and verify that changes dynamically take
    place.

 7. Save the file in PowerPoint 3.0.

 8. Open the file in PowerPoint 4.0. A Microsoft PowerPoint message
    box will display "This presentation is from a previous version of
    PowerPoint. It will be updated to the current version and opened as
    a read-only."

 9. Select Open Read-Only, and save the file under a different file
    name so that you have full editing capabilities.

10. Double click the Excel Worksheet Object in the slide to
    activate its contents.

11. Make some changes in the Excel Worksheet and press ENTER.

12. Switch to PowerPoint 4.0 and you'll find that changes are not
    affected.
