The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0 and 4.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you choose Picture from the Insert menu in PowerPoint 4.0 for
Windows, or Insert Picture from the Edit menu in PowerPoint 3.0 for
Windows, you may notice that the list of available picture types
contains both of these entries:

   Windows Metafile(*.WMF)
   Windows Metafiles(*.WMF)

Alternatively, you may see "Windows Metafile(*.WMF)" listed twice.

CAUSE
=====

This symptom occurs when another application has installed a shared
Windows metafile import filter in your installation of Windows.

RESOLUTION
==========

If you see this symptom, you can choose either entry on the list.
Windows metafile graphics will import identically with either choice.

MORE INFORMATION
================

PowerPoint has internal filters for importing Windows metafiles and
Windows bitmaps. This is so you can import graphics of these image
types even if you do not have enough disk space to install graphics
filters. If you have PowerPoint and no other application that
provides shared graphics converters, you will only get one entry for
Windows metafiles in the Insert Picture dialog box. If you install
another application, such as Word for Windows that comes with a
shared Windows metafile filter, a line will be added to the [MS
Graphic Import Filters] section of your WIN.INI file that is similar to:

   Windows Metafile(.WMF)=C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\GRPHFLT\WMFIMP.FLT,WMF

When you choose to insert a picture into PowerPoint, the file type
list will include Windows metafiles and Windows bitmaps, plus whatever
entries are listed in the [MS Graphic Import Filters] section of
WIN.INI. If these entries include a Windows metafile entry, that
entry will appear as a second Windows metafile choice on the list.

To remove the double entry, place a semicolon (;) in your WIN.INI file at
the beginning of the line listed above, and restart Windows.
Please note that this may affect other applications' ability to
import Windows metafile images.

PowerPoint will always use its internal .WMF filter, even if a
shared filter is also available. Therefore, it does not matter
which of the two entries you choose.
