The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

In Microsoft Word version 5.x, when you open a document in Rich Text Format
(RTF), the document appears in the New York font, rather than the font in
which it was originally formatted.

CAUSE
=====

This occurs if the RTF document is saved from Word 6.0 and contains exactly
one font (for example, the file contains only the font Times).

For example, if an RTF document saved from Word 6.0 is formatted in Times
only, when you open it in Word 5.1, the document font changes to New
York. However, if the RTF document is formatted in Times and Helvetica
(more than one font), the document opens with the proper font formatting.

Word retains other character formatting such as point size, bold, italics,
and so forth. Only the font type is lost.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for the
Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word 6.0.1 for the Macintosh.
