The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS
========
In Microsoft Excel, when you save or open a file, you may receive one of
the following error messages if the path name to the file location is
longer than 255 characters:

 - Cannot find 'Filename'

   -or-

 - Cannot access 'Foldername'

CAUSE
=====
This behavior is by design in Microsoft Excel. The path name of a
file that you open or save is limited to 255 characters because of
the way Microsoft Excel uses the file name internally. For example,
if you save or open a file that has the following path name

   Applications:Microsoft Excel:Folder 1...Filename

where the number of characters from the Applications folder to the
file's name "Filename" exceeds 255, you receive the error messages
above.
In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, when you save a file, you receive the
following error message

   Cannot access 'Foldername'

where Foldername is the name of one of the folders from the beginning
of the path name.

MORE INFORMATION
================
Note that in Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you can create a new folder
by using the New button when you choose Save As from the File menu.
