1. Q. How do I install Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows on a
       network?

   A. You can easily set up PowerPoint 4.0 on a network by using its
built in network Setup feature. For detailed instructions about
setting up PowerPoint 4.0 on a network, please refer to your
       "Microsoft PowerPoint User's Guide."

2. Q. I have Microsoft Office 4.0 installed on a network and just
received the Microsoft Office 4.2 upgrade. Is there anything I
need to know about the upgrade installation to the network?

   A. The Microsoft Office 4.2 Administrative setup must be installed to an
empty directory. Perform the following three-step procedure to
upgrade from Microsoft Office 4.0 to Office 4.2 on a network:

      1. Install Office 4.2 into a different shared location than Office
4.0. This means the MSAPPS directory should ALSO be installed to a
different location that the MSAPPS directory that was installed
         with Microsoft Office 4.0.

      2. Have everyone using Microsoft Office 4.0 upgrade to the new Office
         4.2 installation.

      3. When all upgrades are completed, delete the 4.0 version of
Microsoft Office from its shared location.

3. Q. When running a workstation installation of PowerPoint 4.0 with a
modified SETUP.STF file, I get the following error: "Microsoft
PowerPoint 4.0 Setup was not completed successfully" at the end of
setup. Why am I getting this error and how do I correct the
      problem?

   A. The error occurs if you have specified an invalid directory name as
the destination directory in the SETUP.STF file. To specify a
directory where Setup installs PowerPoint, scroll through the table
until you see "Network Installation" in the third column. Replace the
"%1" in the DestDir column of this row with the name of the directory
where you want Setup to install PowerPoint. For the directory name to
be valid, it must contain a trailing backslash. For example:

X:\USER\PPTDIR This is an invalid directory name

X:\USER\PPTDIR\ This is a valid directory name

4. Q. To conserve hard drive space, we installed Microsoft ClipArt
Gallery as a shared application on a network, and then performed a
workstation installation on a computer running Windows locally.
However, we noticed that more than 6 megabytes of hard drive space
is taken up on each workstation. Is there any way we can decrease
the amount of hard drive space on the workstation installation?

   A. Using this procedure, ClipArt Gallery by design writes the
ARTGALRY.IDX and ARTGALRY.THM files to the local hard disk drive. The
individual users can them modify these files. However, the files may
require as much as 6 megabytes of hard disk space. In some cases, it
is desirable to have only one copy of each of these files and to
store them on a network drive.

5. Q. When running a workstation setup of Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0, I
receive the error message "ACMSetup caused a general protection
fault in module USER.EXE." How do I eliminate this error?

   A. PowerPoint may generate this error if it cannot modify the system
files. This can occur if there is a line in the [386Enh] section of
      the SYSTEM.INI that reads

         device=

with nothing after it. If you delete this line or comment it out by
putting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of this line, you should be
able to run PowerPoint Setup successfully.

6. Q. We are running PowerPoint on a LANtastic network where Windows is
local and PowerPoint is shared. When more than one workstation
tries to access PowerPoint, they get a sharing violation on the
network drive followed by the error message "Cannot find
POWERPOINT.DLL." How can multiple users access PowerPoint at the
      same time?

   A. For multiple users to run PowerPoint simultaneously, the directories
on the server need to be marked as read-only by doing one of the
      following two steps:

      1. At the MS-DOS prompt, type "attrib" (without the quotation
marks) and change the attributes from archive to read only.
(For more information about the ATTRIB command, see your MS-DOS
         manual.)

         -or-

      2. Mark the entire drive as read only (see you LANtastic Network
         documentation).

7. Q. At the end of my administrative setup of PowerPoint 4.0
to a Novell network, I get the error message "Cannot change the
properties of SETUP.INI" or the message "Cannot change properties
of the file named _MSSETUP.EXE." Why am I getting these errors?

   A. These errors are generated if the SETUP.INI file is marked as read-
only. If you receive this error message, try one of the following two
      methods to correct the problem.

METHOD 1: Delete the original SETUP.INI file from your drive. This is
because the original SETUP.INI file may still be present as a Read-
Only file. To resolve the problem, delete the original SETUP.INI file
from your drive before running setup.

      -or-

METHOD 2. Modify the NET.CFG or SHELL.CFG file by using the following
      five-step procedure.

NOTE: To make this process easier to follow, we recommend that you
obtain a copy of this document by ordering article Q119158 from
      the Microsoft PowerPoint FastTips Catalog.

IMPORTANT: If the workstation is using the NetWare DOS Requester
version 1.1, skip the following and go to question 8.

      1. Locate the file SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG on the workstation from
which you are running PowerPoint 4.0 SETUP /A. If this file
does not exist, create it using a text editor and place it in
         the same directory as NETX.COM.

      2. Open the file SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG in a text editor. Change
or create the line that reads

            READ ONLY COMPATIBILITY=ON

         to:

            READ ONLY COMPATIBILITY=OFF

(This line is located in the "NetWare DOS Requester" section
of NET.CFG if you are using Novell NetWare 4.0.)

      3. Log off of the network and restart the workstation.

      4. Log on to the network, start Windows, and run SETUP /A from the
Microsoft Office integrated setup to install the application.

      5. When the application is installed, change the option in the
SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG file back to =ON in case there are
applications on the system that require this setting.

8. Q. I am using Novell's NetWare DOS Requester version 1.1 and getting
the errors listed in question number 7, "Cannot change the
properties of SETUP.INI" or the message "Cannot change properties
of the file named _MSSETUP.EXE." How do I resolve the problem?

   A. If you are running NetWare DOS Requester version 1.1, use the
following six-step procedure to resolve the problem.

NOTE: To make this process easier to follow, we recommend that you
obtain a copy of this document by ordering article Q119158 from the
      Microsoft PowerPoint FastTips Catalog.

      1. Locate the file SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG on the workstation from
which you are running PowerPoint 4.0 SETUP /A. If this file
does not exist, create it using a text editor and place it in
         the same directory as NETX.COM.

      2. Open the file SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG in a text editor. Change
or create the line that reads

            READ ONLY COMPATIBILITY=ON

         to:

            READ ONLY COMPATIBILITY=OFF

(This line is located in the "NetWare DOS Requester" section
of NET.CFG if you are using Novell NetWare 4.0.)

   3. Remove NetWare DOS Requester version 1.1 and use IPX/NETX to
complete the administrative setup. If you CANNOT use NETX, you can
install NetWare DOS Requester version 1.0. However, because
reinstalling NetWare DOS Requester version 1.0 is very time
consuming, using NETX is the preferred method.

   4. Log off of the network and restart the workstation.

   5. Log on to the network, start Windows, and run SETUP /A from the
setup disk to install the application.

   6. When the application is installed, change the option in the SHELL.CFG
or NET.CFG file back to =ON in case there are applications on the
system that require this setting. You can also use NetWare DOS
Requester version 1.1 again without experiencing any problems.

9. Q. How much disk space do I need to install PowerPoint 4.0 on
      a network?

   A. For a workstation installation, you need at least 2 megabytes
available on your local hard drive or in your user directory, but you
may need more depending on how your system administrator configured
the administrator's installation. If you want to perform an
administrator's installation on a network file server or a shared
directory, you need 40 megabytes of available space on the file
server or in the shared directory.
