SYMPTOMS
========

When you click the Report It tool in PowerPoint 4.0, you may receive the
following message:

   Microsoft Word 6.0 is not available.

   Make sure the application is properly installed and has
   not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

   Cannot Access Word 6.0 with Report It

This error may be caused by one of the following cases:

1. Microsoft Word 6.0 is not installed.

2. The [Extensions] section of the WIN.INI file contains an invalid
   path to the WINWORD.EXE file for Word 6.0.

RESOLUTION
==========

To use the Report It tool in PowerPoint 4.0, Microsoft Word 6.0 must
be installed. If Microsoft Word 6.0 is installed and the error still
occurs, there may be an invalid entry in the [Extensions] section of
the WIN.INI file. To correct this problem, do the following:

1. Open the WIN.INI file in a text editor such as Notepad.

2. Locate the [Extensions] section.

3. Locate the entry for the rich text format extension (.RTF).

4. The line should read

      rtf=<drive letter>:<path>\WINWORD.EXE ^.rtf

   where <drive letter> is the drive on which Word 6.0 is installed
   and <path> is the valid path name that points to the Word 6.0
   WINWORD.EXE file.

   For example, the following would be a valid entry if Microsoft Word
   6.0 is installed on drive C in the WINWORD directory:

      rtf=C:\WINWORD\WINWORD.EXE ^.rtf

5. After making any necessary changes to the WIN.INI file, save the file.

6. Restart Windows.

The Report It tool should now work from PowerPoint.

If the problem persists, do the following:

1. Locate an .RTF file in File Manager by choosing Search from the File
   menu and typing the name of the .RTF file in the Search For box.

2. Select the .RTF file (with a single left-mouse click so that it is
   highlighted).

3. From the File menu, choose Associate, and associate it with the Word
   6.0 for Windows executable, WINWORD.EXE, then choose OK.

4. Exit File Manager, restart Windows and run PowerPoint. Report It
   should function correctly.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Report It feature in PowerPoint 4.0 allows you to export an outline
from PowerPoint and run Microsoft Word 6.0. This feature creates a
temporary .RTF (rich text format) file, but requires that the RTF file
extension be associated with Word 6.0 only. If the RTF extension is
associated with the Word 2.0 WINWORD.EXE file, or the path to the Word 6.0
WINWORD.EXE file is incorrect, the Report It feature will not work.
