The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========
In the Mail Merge Helper or when you choose Database from the Insert menu,
Word for Windows cannot use dynamic data exchange (DDE) to open a Microsoft
Access data source (.MDB file).

CAUSE
=====
This problem occurs when you have only the runtime edition of the Microsoft
Access application (MSARN110.EXE or MSARN200.EXE) on your computer.

STATUS
======
We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND
==========

Microsoft Access 1.x
--------------------
Use the Microsoft Access 1.x ODBC driver to retrieve data from a Microsoft
Access 1.x data source. To use this ODBC driver, select MS Access Databases
via ODBC (*.mdb) in the Confirm Data Source dialog box.

Microsoft Access 2.0
--------------------
With Microsoft Access 2.0, you cannot use the current Access 2.0 ODBC
driver to obtain data from a Microsoft Access database unless Microsoft
Access is actually installed on your computer. As a result, there is
currently no known workaround if you have only the runtime edition of
Microsoft Access 2.0 installed on your computer.
