The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

The PowerPoint 4.0 Setup program allows you to choose into which
directory the shared applications (Graph, Organizational Chart,
Equation Editor, ClipArt Gallery, and so on) will be installed.

However, the Change Directory button will not be available if your
computer had a previous installation of PowerPoint 4.0 that was
deleted (with File Manager or MS-DOS commands) rather than removed
using the Setup program. PowerPoint installs the shared
components to the directory specified in the registration database.

WORKAROUND
==========

To re-enable the Change Directory button for the Shared Applications
option in PowerPoint Setup, try one of the following methods:

Method 1
--------

The preferred workaround is to start PowerPoint Setup and run the
PowerPoint Installation Maintenance program. Choose Add/Remove, and clear
the Shared Applications check box.

This removes all references of PowerPoint's shared applications from the
registration database. This method assumes that you still have the
SETUP.STF file from your previous installation of PowerPoint. If you no
longer have the earlier copy of SETUP.STF, you can complete a new
PowerPoint setup, then run Setup again and choose the Add/Remove
option. If you then reinstall PowerPoint, you will be able to change the
directory for the shared applications.

For more information about running the PowerPoint Installation Maintenance
program to remove components of PowerPoint, see pages 218-219 of the
"Microsoft PowerPoint User's Guide."

Method 2
--------

The following method involves using the Registration Info Editor
(REGEDIT.EXE) to remove PowerPoint's shared applications from the
Registration Info Database (REG.DAT.)

1. Make a backup copy of your REG.DAT file. REG.DAT is located in the
   same directory as your WIN.INI file.

2. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu, then type the
   following in the Command Line box and press ENTER:

      regedit.exe

3. You will see a list of all your registered file types. Select each of
   the following entries and press the DEL key on your keyboard:

      Microsoft ClipArt Gallery
      Microsoft Equation 2.0
      Microsoft Graph 5.0
      Microsoft Organization Chart
      Microsoft WordArt 2.0

4. From the File menu, choose Exit.

5. Open your WIN.INI file in a text editor such as Notepad.

6. Locate the section titled [Embedding]:

7. Delete the following lines in this section:

      MSWordArt.2=Microsoft WordArt 2.0,Microsoft WordArt
          2.0,C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\WORDART\WORDART2.EXE,picture
      MS_ClipArt_Gallery=Microsoft ClipArt Gallery,Microsoft ClipArt
          Gallery,C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\ARTGALRY\ARTGALRY.EXE,picture
      Equation.2=Microsoft Equation 2.0,Microsoft Equation
          2.0,C:\WFW31.466\MSAPPS\EQUATION\EQNEDIT.EXE,picture
      MSGraph.Chart.5=Microsoft Graph 5.0,Microsoft Graph
          5.0,C:\WFW31.466\MSAPPS\MSGRAPH5\GRAPH5.EXE,picture
      MSOrgChart.1=Microsoft Organization Chart 1.0,Microsoft
          Organization Chart 1.0,C:\WFW31.466\MSAPPS
          \ORGCHART\ORGCHART.EXE,picture

8. Save your WIN.INI file.

MORE INFORMATION
================

PowerPoint 4.0 Setup queries the Registration database to determine
where to install the shared applications shipped with PowerPoint.

If there is no entry in the registration database for the shared
files, you may install to the default directory, C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS,
or you can choose the Change Directory button, and install to a
different location.
