The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
 - Microsoft Organization Chart for Windows, version 1.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you ungroup an Organization Chart object in PowerPoint, the object may
disappear.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs if you created the Organization Chart object while
PowerPoint was in a view percentage greater than 75 percent.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in PowerPoint for Windows
versions 4.0, 4.0a, and 4.0c. This problem was corrected in PowerPoint
version 7.0 for Windows 95.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Method 1: Prevent the Problem
-----------------------------

To prevent the problem from occurring, set the zoom to 75 percent or
less before you start the Organization Chart application.

When the object is returned to PowerPoint, you can zoom to any percentage
you want, and the ungroup feature works as expected.

Method 2: Correct the Problem
-----------------------------

To correct the problem after you have already created an Organization
Chart while viewing your PowerPoint slide at greater than 75 percent:

 1. From PowerPoint, double-click the existing Organization Chart object.

 2. Save the Organization Chart object as an .OPX file.

 3. Exit Organization Chart and return to the presentation without
    updating.

 4. From the toolbar in PowerPoint, set the zoom percentage to 75
    percent or less.

 5. Delete the existing Organization Object from the slide.

 6. Click the Organization Chart icon on the toolbar.

 7. From the File menu in Organization Chart, choose Open.

 8. From the Open Chart dialog box, locate the saved .OPX file and
    click OK.

 9. From the Edit menu, choose Select, then select All.

10. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

11. From the Window menu, select Object In Presentation.

12. Click each individual box (provided as the default Organization Chart
    object when you first started Organization Chart), and delete each box
    until there is only one left. Click the last box in the Organization
    Chart to make it active, but don't delete it.

13. From the Edit menu, select Paste Boxes.

    NOTE: The paste operation adds the copied boxes to the remaining
    single-box Organization Chart.

14. Click the box that was originally provided when launching Organization
    Chart (the box that was left in step l [L]) and delete it.

15. From the File menu, choose Exit And Return To Presentation. A message
    appears that states:

       This object has been changed. Do you want to Update Object
       in Presentation1 before proceeding?

16. Click the Yes button.

You can now ungroup the Organization Chart object, and the object will act
as expected.

MORE INFORMATION
================

When this problem occurs, several things have happened to the Organization
Chart object:

 - The boxes and text have been separated from each other. The text is
   together but is a few inches to the right of the Organization Chart
   boxes. The boxes are to the far left of the object's placeholder.

 - The pieces of the object have been ungrouped from each other.

 - The object is now the same height as it was before it was ungrouped, but
   its width is now the width of the entire work area.

 - Attempts to move the object or its text back to the slide area fail
   because the object is as wide as the entire work area.

If you start Organization Chart from PowerPoint, save the Organization
Chart object as an .OPX file, and exit Organization Chart without updating
the PowerPoint presentation, the above characteristics are retained by the
Organization Chart object.

The same ungrouping problems occur as soon as you insert the .OPX file in a
PowerPoint file and ungroup it.
