The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, version 4.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you save a Microsoft Works file to a disk other than the startup
volume, and then attempt to link information between two files, the
Link option will not be available. Additionally, the Works application must
reside on the same volume.

RESOLUTION
==========

To link files in Microsoft Works, all files involved must be saved on the
hard drive that contains the active system software.

MORE INFORMATION
================

This limitation is only with Works files that are being linked internally.
For example, if you are linking a Works spreadsheet to a Works Word
Processor document, both of these must be on the drive containing the
active startup folder. However, if you link to another application such as
Excel or Word, the files do not have to reside in the same location.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works version 4.0 for the
Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information
here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
