The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
 - Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========
You may not be able to open files sent as attachments from Microsoft Mail
for the Macintosh or the Macintosh client for Microsoft Mail for PC
Networks to a Windows or Windows NT client of Microsoft Mail for PC
Networks if you are using Word 6.0 (for Windows or Windows NT), Microsoft
Excel 5.0 (for Windows or Windows NT,) or Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 for
Windows. The file retains the MacBinary information from Microsoft Word for
the Macintosh, which is not understood by Windows or Windows NT.
There are two messages you can encounter:

 - If the file being sent as an enclosure does not have an MS-DOS extension
   (for example, .DOC, .DOT, or .WIZ), you will receive a "Convert File"
   message.
   Word would automatically open the file directly, but the MacBinary
   information has not been removed by Microsoft Mail, so Word cannot
   convert the document and the following message occurs:
      Word cannot start the converter WORDWIN1.CNV.
 - If the file does not have a .DOC extension, the following message will
   occur:
      The application for the attached file "<filename>" (or one of its
      components) could not be found.

CAUSE
=====
Microsoft Mail for PC Networks (both the Windows and Windows NT clients) do
not have entries for Word 6.0 or Microsoft Excel 5.0 for the application's
File and Creator Types. This is recorded in the MSMAIL.INI (in Microsoft
Windows) and the Windows NT Registry, respectively. This causes the
MacBinary information to not be removed, making the file unreadable by the
application.

STATUS
======
These lines will be added to all versions of the Microsoft Mail client for
Windows and Windows NT after Window NT 3.5.

RESOLUTION
==========
To correct this problem, add entries for Word and Microsoft Excel's new
File Types.
To add these entries for Microsoft Mail under Microsoft Windows, add the
following lines in the [Mac File Types] section of the MSMAIL.INI:
   :HELP=.hlp
   MSWD:W6BN=.doc
   MSWD:WTBN=.dot
   MSWD:WDLL=.wdl
   MSWD:WIZ!=.wiz
   XCEL:XLS5=.xls
   XCEL:XLA5=.xla
   XCEL:XLL =.xll
In Microsoft Windows NT, this must be done in the Windows NT Registry
(REGEDT32.EXE). To add these entries to the Registry:
 1. From File or Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
 2. Type "REGEDT32" (without the quotation marks).
 3. In the Windows NT Registry, choose "HKEY_CURRENT_USER on Local Machine"
    from the Window menu.
 4. Double-click the Software subfolder.
 5. Double-click the Microsoft subfolder.
 6. Double-click the Mail subfolder.
 7. Single-click the Mac File Types folder.
 8. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value.
 9. In the Add Value dialog box, type the first Creator and File Type with
    a colon separating them (for example, MSWD:W6BN). NOTE: This entry is
    case sensitive, so make sure that it's in the correct case. Choose OK.
10. In the String dialog box, type the corresponding extension (for
    example, .doc).
    Note: This should be in lower case. Choose OK.
11. The entry has been added. Repeat this for each of the new file
    associations.
