SYMPTOMS
========

If you merge the Word Settings file created with Word version 4.x or 5.x to
Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, some unexpected and unpredictable numeric
keypad behavior may result.

CAUSE
=====

If you chose to convert the settings from the earlier version of Word in
order to use Work menus or default margins, the Num Lock function fails to
works as expected. Toggling the numeric keypad with SHIFT+NUM LOCK appears
to work in that the Num Lock light turns on or off, but the only key that
works is the 5. All other keys only beep when pressed.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

To correct this problem, choose Customize from the Tools menu, select the
Keyboard tab, and choose Reset All. This performs an undo of previous
modifications to the Normal template. Alternatively, you can remove the
Normal Template from the Templates folder and restart Word 6.0, keeping in
mind that previous styles, macros, and AutoText entries are stored in the
old Normal template.

To work around the problem after you have recovered proper functionality of
the numeric keypad, use the following methods:

Method 1: When you merge the Word Settings files, select the option to save
          to a new template rather than merging to the current template.

Method 2: In Word 6.0, use the Organizer to bring in only the styles that
          are desired.

          No other settings from earlier versions are available to be
          merged using the Organizer. Only styles can be merged.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Page 213 of the "Microsoft Word 6.0 User's Guide" and page 219 of the
"Update Guide" provide instructions for using Word settings from earlier
versions of Word for the Macintosh with version 6.0.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem
------------------------------

1. From the File menu, choose Open.
2. From the List Files Of Type list, select All Files.
3. Select the Word Settings (6) file.
4. From the resulting dialog box, select Merge To Current.

Although the settings may appear to be merged and the menus may be present,
the process causes the loss of Num Lock function.
