The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft SNA Server for Windows NT, version 2.1.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to start WNAP.EXE on a Banyan Vines client to an SNA Server running the Banyan Vines redirector, the client may receive return code 177. This only occurs when there is a Token Ring bridge between the client and the SNA Server computer. Moving the client onto the same ring as the SNA Server corrects the problem, though this is not a feasible solution in most cases. Return Code 177 is a Banyan Vines message that translates to the following:

   177 - BYRDISC: VINES SPP terminates an SPP virtual connection. Causes
   can involve LAN failures, lack of sufficient communications buffers, or
   an insufficient limit on the number of concurrent SPP connections.

CAUSE
=====

Banyan Vines has confirmed this problem to occur with one of the following configurations:

 - Windows NT version 3.5 running the Banyan Vines Early Release Program (EAP) redirector (DAYTONA3.ZIP).

   NOTE: The Banyan redirector EAP (Early Access Program) for Daytona is an unreleased product.

   -or-

 - Windows NT version 3.1 running the shipping version of the Banyan Vines redirector for Windows NT 3.1 without applying the NTSLR.ZIP patch file from Banyan.

RESOLUTION
==========

The respective resolutions for the above causes are:

 - Wait for DAYTONA4.ZIP and apply it to Windows NT version 3.5 using the instructions included. It will be posted to the BOA BBS in the near future.

   -or-

 - Apply NTSLR.ZIP to Windows NT 3.1. It can also be found on the BOA BBS.

The BOA BBS number is (508) 836-1834. To get to the Daytona section, from the main menu, choose (S)cripts, and then (D)ownload.
