The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 5.1a, 6.0, 6.0.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you try to open a Microsoft Word 6.0 for the Macintosh document into
Word 5.0, 5.1, or 5.1a for the Macintosh using the Word 6.0 for
Windows/Macintosh converter, the following message briefly appears:

   Converting Word 6.0 for Windows/Macintosh file.
   Document will appear in a new untitled window.

   0%                                     (Cancel)

However, the message soon disappears, the file is not converted, and Word
returns you to the document window.

CAUSE
=====

The "Word 6.0 for Windows/Macintosh" version 1.0 converter was released
prior to the release of Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. Subsequent changes in
the Word 6.0 for the Macintosh file format prevent this first version of
the converter from successfully reading a Word 6.0 for the Macintosh file.
(You can still use the converter to successfully read Word 6.0 for Windows
documents.)

RESOLUTION
==========

An updated version of the converter is now available. This new release can
be used to successfully open both Word 6.0 for the Macintosh and Word 6.0
for Windows documents into Word 5.x for the Macintosh.

For additional information on how to obtain this converter update, please
see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION
================

You can verify that the version 1.0 converter is the cause of your problem
by checking the name of the Word 6.0 converter in the Word Commands folder
in the Word 5.x folder. The release of the converter that cannot read a
Word 6.0 for the Macintosh document includes a slash (/) in its name:

   Word 6.0 for Windows/Macintosh

The new converter that can read both Word 6.0 for Windows and Macintosh
documents includes an ampersand (&) in its name:

   Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh
