 - Microsoft Works for Windows, version 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.0b

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to save a document from Works for Windows in the Word for
Macintosh 4.0, 5.0, or 5.1 format, you may receive the following error
message:

   MSWORKS caused a General Protection Fault in WORDMAC.CNV

CAUSE
=====

This general protection (GP) fault occurs only with the following Word 6.0x
converter:

   WORDMAC.CNV     177664K   <date varies>

    NOTE: The file size above may also vary depending on the version of
    Word you are using.

RESOLUTION
==========

To correct this problem, use one of the following workarounds:

 - Save the document in one of the following formats supported by Word for
   the Macintosh:

    - RTF (supported in all versions of Word for the Macintosh)
    - Word for Windows 1.x (supported in Word 5.x for the Macintosh)
    - Word for Windows 2.0 (supported in Word for 5.x the Macintosh)

   -or-

 - Install the WORDMAC.CNV converter from Word 2.0 for Windows. Word 2.0
   for Windows sets the reference for the WORDMAC.CNV in the [MS Word
   Converters] section of the WIN.INI file. You will need to add the
   following lines to the [MS Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file:

      MSWordMac=Word for Macintosh 5.1,
      c:\windows\msapps\textconv\WORDMAC.CNV, mcw

      MSWordMac5=Word for Macintosh 5.0,
      c:\windows\msapps\textconv\WORDMAC.CNV, mcw

      MSWordMac4=Word for Macintosh 4.0,
      c:\windows\msapps\textconv\WORDMAC.CNV, mcw

       NOTE: Type each entry above (shown above as two lines of text) as a
       single-line entry in the WIN.INI file.

STATUS
======

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
================

WORDMAC.CNV is shipped with Word for Windows and Office for Windows. It is
installed in the Windows MSAPPS\TEXTCONV directory and referenced in the
[MS Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file for use by any application
that uses the Microsoft text converters.

This error does not occur with the following Word 2.0 converters:

   WORDMAC.CNV     153184   10/21/91  2.0
   WORDMAC.CNV     153184    2/11/92  2.0a
   WORDMAC.CNV     153648    8/31/92  2.0b
   WORDMAC.CNV     153648   11/18/92  2.0c

Word 6.0a and 6.0c will still convert a file to Word for Macintosh with
these earlier versions of the converters.

Works lists all the file formats that are in the [MS Text Converters]
section of the WIN.INI file when you choose Save As. The following table
lists the converters that ship with Works 3.0 for Windows.

Converter Filename File Size File Date Word Replaces

Works 3.0 for Mac WK3MCNV.CNV 146432 varies No

NOTE: WK3MCNV.CNV is installed in the MSWORKS directory instead of the
Windows MSAPPS\TEXTCONV, and is referenced in the MSWORKS3.INI [MS Text
Converters] section instead of the WIN.INI.
