5. CD-ROM Problems

COMMON SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS WITH CD-ROM DRIVES

NOTE: Do not remove the Encarta compact disc from your CD-ROM drive while
running Encarta.

If Encarta cannot find the data files it needs to run, you will see an
error message prompting you to correct the problem. To find the source of
the problem, do the following:

  * Make sure the Encarta compact disc is correctly inserted into the
    CD-ROM drive.
  * Make sure that the drive is connected to your computer correctly
and it is functioning in MS-DOS. If you have an external CD-ROM
drive, make sure the power is turned on. You can test the
function in MS-DOS by viewing a directory of the drive at an
MS-DOS prompt. To do this, change to the CD-ROM drive at an
MS-DOS prompt, type DIR, then press ENTER.

  * Make sure that the Encarta program is looking for the compact disc
on the correct drive. Check that the ENCARTA.INI file is in the
Windows directory. The section called [95Options] should have an
entry called "BookPath." The path should be set to the \ENCYC95\
directory on the drive that your CD-ROM appears as. For example,
if your CD-ROM drive is drive D, the entry would appear like the
    following:

      [95Options]
      BookPath=D:\encyc95\

If you still see an error message after checking the points above, check
the manuals that came with your CD-ROM drive for information on how a CD-
ROM is to be set up, or contact the company that supplied the drive.

6. Word Processors and Encarta

USING ENCARTA WITH WORD PROCESSORS TIPS AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Encarta allows you to create multimedia reports by copying and pasting
pictures and sounds into Microsoft Write or your word processor of choice.
Audio clips can be pasted as icons into other applications. Double-clicking
these icons will play the audio clip. Photos, illustrations, and maps can
be pasted into other applications also.

Note that some applications will use black or white "placeholders" for
pictures when they are pasted into that application. This is to improve
performance, since actual pictures in word processing documents can slow
down scrolling and other functions. The pictures should appear properly
when you print a document that has been using placeholders for pictures.

Remember that anything that you copy into another application should be
credited with a footnote or acknowledgment. See Encarta documentation for
details. Please obey copyright laws.

SELECTING A CUSTOM WORD PROCESSOR TO CALL FROM ENCARTA

By clicking the Settings command from the Information menu, you can use the
Choose Word Processor button to select any Windows application as the word
processor that you will call up with Encarta's Word Processor menu item.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR CALLING WORD PROCESSORS FROM ENCARTA

A few tips will help you in using Encarta's Word Processor menu:

  1. If you Choose a Word Processor in the Settings box, you must
then make sure that this word processor is not already open in
Windows. If you have it open when you select the Word Processor
menu item in Encarta, a second instance will be launched.

  2. Once you open your application with the Word Processor menu
item, you can use this menu command to bring the Word Processor
back after you have minimized it. This makes research and
      report writing more convenient.

  3. Certain Windows applications do not respond to the command used
by Encarta's word processor menu to bring the word processor
back after it has been minimized. These applications generally
have complicated execution commands that Encarta cannot call
properly. The next item, number 4, explains how to work around
this problem to switch back and forth from Encarta to your word
      processor.

  4. If you encounter problems bringing your word processor back up
with the Encarta Word Processor command, you can use several
methods to switch to your word processor. In each case, make
sure your word processor is open before using the Task List.

      a. Hold down the ALT key, and press TAB repeatedly. This will
cycle each open Windows application to the foreground in order.
When you see the application you want, let go of the ALT key,
      and that application will appear.

      b. Use the Windows Task List to switch to another application.
There are three ways to bring up the Task List:

        * Click the Encarta Control Menu on the left side of the menu
bar, then click the Switch To command.

        * Double-click anywhere on the Windows desktop that is outside
a window. The Windows Task List will appear.

        * Press the CTRL key and the ESC key. The Windows Task List
          will appear.

When the Task List is open, click once on your word processor in
the list to highlight it. Then press the Switch To button. This
will bring your word processor to the foreground. You can then
use the same method from within your word processor to get back
      to Encarta.

  5. You will get an Error Message from the Encarta Word Processor
command if you select a word processor and then delete that word
processor from your hard disk, or if Encarta cannot find a valid
Windows application from your selection. In this case, you must
choose a new word processor using Options before the Word
Processor command will work for you.

7. Running Encarta on Windows NT

Encarta 95 may need to copy some files to your system directory. In order
for setup to do this, you must be a member of the Administrator group when
you log on. Otherwise, setup will not be able to copy these files to your
drive. You can check your user status with the User Manager.

Encarta runs well on Windows NT with the following exceptions:

  * Encarta 1995 videos will not run on Windows NT version 3.1. You
must have Windows NT version 3.5 or later in order to run videos.

  * When you play videos in Encarta 1995 on Windows NT version 3.5 or
later, you may notice strange colors appearing around
the video window. This is a known problem. The colors should
return to normal once the video is done playing.

  * If you are running on Windows NT version 3.1, you will not be
able to hear the audio in the World Language InterActivity, and
you will not be able to hear the pronunciations for the place
     names in the Atlas.

  * When you run Encarta Setup on Windows NT version 3.1, you will
receive a file error message "Cannot find MSVIDEO.DLL". Do not
worry about this error. This will not effect your performance
     under NT 3.1.

  * Encarta 1995 will fail on exit if you select "Run in Separate
Memory Space" in the Properties dialog for Encarta in the Program
Manager. The default setting has this option turned off, so
     Encarta will run properly.

  * When you run Encarta Setup on a non-Intel Windows NT machine
(i.e. Mips or Alpha processor), you may receive an error Profdisp
causes an illegal instruction...". Do not worry about this
error. One module of setup fails, but setup will complete and
     Encarta will run properly.

  * On non-Intel Windows NT machines (i.e. Mips or Alpha processor),
you may receive error messages when you try to play various
pieces of audio or video. This is because, at the time of the
release of Encarta 95, there were not versions of all media
drivers available for all non-Intel platforms.

  * If you have a non-Intel Windows NT machine (i.e. Mips or Alpha
processor) then you will need to manually install a DLL that does
not have the 80386 code found in the DLL installed by default.

This file is in the \ENCARTA\NT directory on the CD and is called
POEMWINC.DLL. To install this file, do the following:

     - Do a complete setup of Encarta. You must choose the "Faster"
installation option so that the files to be replaced run from the
     hard drive.

     - Copy the file from the \ENCARTA\NT directory on the CD into the
same directory you designated in Setup (C:\ENCARTA by default).
This file replaces the one setup copied there.

NOTE: On non-Intel NT machines the Encarta Dictionary/Thesaurus
should not be run because it will cause Encarta to fail.

8. Using Encarta with Microsoft Works 3.0 for Windows, Multimedia
    Edition

Unleash the power of Encarta with Microsoft Works 3.0 for Windows,
Multimedia Edition. With the click of a button, you can launch Encarta from
within Works to have it automatically look up the currently selected word
or automatically do a search through all of Encarta for that word. (See the
Works for Windows 3.0, Multimedia Edition documentation for details on how
to use this feature.)

If you plan to use Works and Encarta together we strongly recommend that
you choose the Faster installation option in Encarta's setup program. With
the Faster installation, the Encarta program files are always accessible
from your hard disk. If you choose the Slower installation, Encarta may not
be able to access needed program files if the Encarta CD is not in the CD-
ROM drive.

9. Mouse Cursor Problem

If you find that the mouse cursor jumps around on the screen when you
perform certain actions in Encarta, and you are using Microsoft
IntelliPoint mouse software, you need to turn off the "snap-to" option.
Open the Control Panel, usually found in the Main group in Program Manager,
and select the Mouse option. Turn off the snap-to option in the Mouse
Manager dialog and close the Mouse Manager and the Control Panel.
