SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you save a converted Microsoft Word 4.0 or 5.x file in Word versions 
6.0 and later for the Macintosh, the file size may increase significantly.
 
CAUSE
=====
 
Word 4.0 and 5.x use a flat file storage model, which takes up less space
but is not as flexible as the file model in Word 6.0 and Word 98 Macintosh 
Edition.

================
 
Word 6.0 and 98 documents are larger than Word 4.0 and 5.x documents 
because more overhead is required per file to manage OLE technology. Each 
file is structured hierarchically where the file's data and objects are 
stored in a catalog. Even if the file contains no data or objects, the file 
structure, called OLE DocFile structure, is still neccessary.
 
While Word 6.0 and 98 files are larger, there are several advantages to the 
OLE DocFile structure. One advantage is that Word 6.0 and 98 documents that 
contain embedded objects can be distributed to other users without the 
object's server program, and Word saves the object instead of converting it 
to a picture. In addition, other programs that support OLE can display the 
contents of the object without having to know the format of the individual 
file objects.
