The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

Text descenders--such as lowercase "q", "y", "p", and "j"--may be cropped
in a Word 6.0 for Windows table embedded in PowerPoint. This only affects
the screen display. The text will print properly. This can happen if your
Windows default printer driver is set to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) 4 Series
printer.

CAUSE
=====

Word 6.0 obtains font attribute information from the font definition
itself, interacting with the printer driver. Word does not impose any
parameters on the display of these font attributes. Therefore, font
attributes display in Word as they will print.

However, PowerPoint uses built-in parameters to display an embedded object.
Some font attributes and paragraph formatting from the object server (Word
6.0, in this case) may be lost in the embedding process. Workaround Method
2, below, converts the imported Word object into a native PowerPoint
object. The PowerPoint object now interacts directly with the printer
driver for font attributes.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Method 1: Change the Line Spacing in Word
-----------------------------------------

1. Double-click the embedded table to return to Word 6.0 for editing.

2. Click Paragraph on the Format menu.

3. Set the line spacing to Multiple.

4. Enter a number for line spacing in the At box. The descenders usually
   re-appear with an entry between 1.15 and 1.5.

5. Click OK in the Paragraph dialog box.

6. Click outside of the table to return to PowerPoint view.

Method 2: Change the Table to PowerPoint Objects
------------------------------------------------

1. Select the Word table object in the PowerPoint slide.

2. On the Draw menu, click Ungroup.

3. The following message appears:

      This is an imported object, not a group. Converting it to
      PowerPoint objects will permanently discard any embedded data or
      linking information it may contain. Convert to PowerPoint objects?

   Click OK.

NOTE: You won't be able to edit this table in Word anymore. You
will have to make all further changes in PowerPoint.

MORE INFORMATION
================

You can insert a Word table in a PowerPoint slide by either clicking the
Table button or by clicking Word Table on the Insert menu. Word 6.0 is
started and creates a table.

When you type text into the table it appears normally. When you return to
the PowerPoint slide, any text with descenders (the part of the letter that
extends below the text baseline) may be cropped on the screen. Some font
families extend the text descender lower than other font families for
stylistic reasons and may exhibit more cropping.
