The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 5.1a
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you try to open a Microsoft Word version 6.0 or later document in Word
5.x for the Macintosh, the document name does not appear in the File Open
dialog box when Readable Files is selected in the List Files Of Type list.
This occurs even if the appropriate text converter is properly installed.

WORKAROUND
==========

To display Word versions 6.0 and later documents n the Word 5.x File Open
dialog box, select All Files from the List Files Of Type list.

STATUS
======

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post additional information
here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Word 5.x uses the Macintosh file type to determine whether to display
documents of a particular type as readable files, and Word depends on each
installed file converter to report the file type(s) that it can interpret.

The Word 6.0 For Windows&Macintosh converter reports a file type of "****",
which allows Word to open a document with potentially any file type. The
converter is designed to expect any file type because it is used by Word
5.x to read Word 6.0 for Windows documents. These documents, when
transferred from a PC to a Macintosh, may have any of a number of different
file types.

Word 6.0 for the Macintosh documents have the file type "W6BN." The
wildcard file type reported by the converter does not, however, lead Word
5.x to display Word 6.0 for the Macintosh documents as readable files.
