SUMMARY

16-bit and 32-bit Office Enabler Kits are now available to Enable users who are upgrading to, or have already upgraded to Microsoft Office version 4.2 or more recent. These kits include converters that allow Word 6.0 and 7.0 for Windows to convert directly to and from Enable versions 3.0, 4.0, and 4.5 word processing formats. Also included are converters that allow Microsoft Excel 5.0 and 7.0 to open Enable 3.0, 4.0 and 4.5 worksheet files.

Be sure to specify whether you need the 16-bit version of the kit designed for use with Word 6.0 and Excel 5.0, or the 32-bit release designed for use with Word and Excel 7.0.

INSTALLING THE ENABLE CONVERTERS

Once you have received the free conversion disk, complete the following steps to install the Enable converter for use with Word:

Insert the conversion disk in drive A.
From Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
Type "a:\setup" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.
When the Enable converter Setup menu appears, press ENTER.

The 16-bit Enable Conversion Setup installs the ENABLEWP.CNV word processing converter in the Word 6.0 for Windows program directory and registers the converter with three lines similar to the following in the [MS Text Converters] section in WIN.INI file:

   Enable 3.0=Enable 3.0, <path>\ENABLEWP.CNV, wpf wpi wpt wta wpa wpp
   Enable 4.0=Enable 4.0, <path>\ENABLEWP.CNV, wpf wpi wpt wta wpa wpp
   Enable 4.5=Enable 4.5, <path>\ENABLEWP.CNV, wpf wpi wpt wta wpa wpp

The 16-bit Enable spreadsheet converter for use with Microsoft Excel 5.0 is installed as ENABLESS.CNV in the Excel program directory and is registered with a line similar to the following in the [Converters] section of EXCEL5.INI:

   EnableSS=Enable Spreadsheet (*.ssf), <path>\ENABLESS.CNV, *.ssf

Help file ENCONVRT.HLP is installed in your Windows directory and can be accessed via an Enable Help Icon installed in a program group of your choice in Program Manager.

The 32-bit Enable Conversion Setup installs the ENAWP32.CNV word processing converter in the Word 7.0 for Windows 95 program directory, usually C:\MSOFFICE\WINWORD. Below are the entries made in the Windows Registry with the extensions, name, and path listed respectively:

The Enable Converter Help file is also installed and can be accessed from the Start menu by clicking Programs, then Enable Converter Help.

TO OPEN AN ENABLE WORD PROCESSING DOCUMENT INTO WORD

To open an Enable word processing file in Word:

From the File menu, choose Open.
Type the name of the file (including the .wpf extension) you wish to open or type *.wpf to select a file.
Choose OK.

Note: Word does not automatically recognize Enable files based on file content. Rather, Word depends upon file extension to identify a file as an Enable document. Therefore, if your document does not have one of the default expected file extensions (WPF, WPI, WPT, WTA, WPA, WPP), Word will propose to open the document as Text Only. In such cases, select the appropriate Enable format option from the File Type list.

TO SAVE A WORD DOCUMENT AS ENABLE WORD PROCESSING FORMAT

From the File menu, choose Save As.
Select the appropriate Enable format option from the list of File Types.
To save a document with a new name, type a new filename. To save a document with an existing filename, select the name in the list or type the current name.
Choose OK.

TO OPEN AN ENABLE SPREADSHEET IN EXCEL

From the File menu, choose Open.
In the Open dialog box, select Enable Spreadsheet as the file format in the List Files of Type option.
Select or type the name of the file(including the ssf extension) you wish to open.
Choose OK.

CONVERSION CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

The 16 and 32-bit Enable word processing converters referenced above do not support conversion of Enable version 1.15, 2.0, or 2.15 file formats. For information on third-party vendors that do support conversion from these formats to Word, query on the following Words here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Alternatively, each of these versions of Enable can export to RFT-DCA format which can subsequently be read by Word.
Enable versions 3.0, 4.0, and 4.5 can also export word processing documents in Word for MS-DOS format, and Enable 4.5 can export in WordPerfect 5.x format. Each of these interim formats can be read by Word.
The DOS-based Enable product is not being upgraded to the Windows platform. Therefore, Microsoft and Enable have announced the formation of a strategic alliance that will provide Enable DOS users with the best upgrade path to the Microsoft Windows operating system. The Enable converter disk is provided to assist in a smooth transition to Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office.
