SUMMARY
=======

When you link a PowerPoint slide into another application, an item number
is generated by PowerPoint to identify the specific slide. You can see this
in the Edit Links dialog box.

This unique ID is generated to maintain the link even if slides in the
presentation may have been deleted or rearranged. PowerPoint item numbers
are assigned beginning with 256. Each item number is unique for each slide
within the presentation.

MORE INFORMATION
================

You can see how these item numbers work by linking a PowerPoint slide to a
Word for Windows document:

 1. Start PowerPoint 4.0.

 2. Select Open An Existing Presentation from the startup screen.

 3. Select the WIZARDS subdirectory.

 4. Select BADNEWS.PPT and choose OK.

 5. Choose Slide Sorter from the View menu.

 6. Select slide number 1.

 7. Select Edit and Copy.

 8. Minimize PowerPoint and start Word for Windows.

 9. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special. Choose MS PowerPoint 4.0
    Slide Object.

10. Choose the Paste Link option button. Choose OK. Slide 1 from
    BADNEWS.PPT will appear in your Word document.

11. With the linked slide highlighted, select Links from the Edit menu.

12. Note the item number.

13. Restore PowerPoint and repeat steps 6 through 12 with slide number 5.

14. Return to PowerPoint.

15. Select Slide 1 and drag to the Slide 5 position.

16. Select Slide 7 and drag to the Slide 1 position. Slides 1 and 5 are
    not in their original positions any more.

17. Go back to Word and double-click any linked slide.

You will be returned to the slide, not the position that the slide was
originally in.
