Symptoms

A LAN Manager 2.2c client does not recognize the domain name provided by Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

When a LAN Manager 2.2c client is configured to use DHCP, the DHCP server provides the domain name (TCP/IP Internet domain name) automatically. Although you can see the correct domain name when you use IPCONFIG at the MS-DOS prompt, if you type ping <Host_Name> (where <Host_Name> is the name of a host on the network), the LAN Manager 2.2c client does not append the domain name onto the host name as it should.

Cause

Even though the LAN Manager 2.2c client has received the domain name from the DHCP server, it still checks the TCPUTILS.INI files.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use the LAN Manager 2.2c Setup program to explicitly configure the domain name.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in LAN Manager version 2.2c. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
