The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you double-click the PowerPoint 4.0 icon, PowerPoint 3.0 may start
instead.

CAUSE
=====

Case 1: The program item property for the PowerPoint icon is incorrect.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The command line associated with the PowerPoint icon specifies the
PowerPoint 3.0 program.

Case 2: A network program meters the usage of PowerPoint.
---------------------------------------------------------

A network metering software package is set to meter PowerPoint and has not
been updated to reflect the new subdirectory for PowerPoint 4.0. If this is
the case, trying to run the POWERPNT.EXE file directly either by using the
Run command from the Program Manager File menu, or by double-clicking on
the file in File Manager will result in PowerPoint 3.0 starting up.

RESOLUTION
==========

Case 1
------

For the icon in Program Manager:

1. Click once on the PowerPoint icon in Program Manager to select it.

2. From the File menu, choose Properties.

3. Change the Command Line to run POWERPNT.EXE from the PowerPoint 4.0
   directory.

For the icon in Office Manager:

1. Choose the Office Manager tool button and choose Customize.

2. Clear the Microsoft PowerPoint check box to remove the PowerPoint 3.0
   button.

3. Choose the Add button, and insert the information for PowerPoint 4.0.
   A new tool button for PowerPoint 4.0 will be created.

Case 2
------

Run the metering software's configuration program and change the path
information for PowerPoint's directory.

A metering program that is monitoring the usage of PowerPoint will
intercept a request for starting POWERPNT.EXE and replace POWERPNT.EXE with
a stub program. The stub program will get the location of the actual
executable program from its configuration program, not from information in
the Run command or the Program Item Properties. One such metering program
is AppMeter. The path information in the metering program's configuration
editor must be updated to reflect the new program version.

For information about editing AppMeter, please see the following article in the
