SYMPTOMS
========

When you use the Microsoft TechNet CD and define the search query
"windows nt" (without the quotation marks) as the first two parameters,
your computer will appear to hang (stop responding).

CAUSE
=====

When you query with the words "windows nt" in this precise order the system
will appear to stop responding, but actually TechNet is still searching for
the topic. If you wait two or three minutes (depending upon the speed of
the computer), you will see the CD-ROM drive light up and finish the
search.

STATUS
======

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Several options that can help prevent prolonged queries are listed below.

Method 1: a. Run Microsoft TechNet. Press CTRL+F after loading TechNet, or
             choose Find from the Tools menu.

          b. In the Topic Area To Search list, select Title Only.

          c. Retry the search query.

Method 2: a. When the system appears to hang, simultaneously press
             CTRL+ALT+DEL one time. The following Windows message will be
             displayed:

             - MSIN.EXE
             - This Windows application has stopped responding to the
               system.

          b. Either press the ENTER key to shut down TechNet, or press ESC
             to return to the Technet query and wait for the search results
             to appear.

Method 3: Wait for the system to respond. The system only appears to hang
          and could take two or three minutes to complete the search query.

Method 4: Reverse the words "windows" and "nt". Do not change any other
          parameters. Then, retry the search query.
