The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for the Power Macintosh, version 4.0b
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to open Works 4.0 for the Power Macintosh, you may receive
the following error message:

   There is not enough memory to open Microsoft Works 4.0, (7,071K needed,
   <memory> available). Closing Windows or quitting desk accessories can
   make more memory available.

In the above error message, <memory> is the amount of Random Access Memory
(RAM) available on your computer.

CAUSE
=====

Software written specifically for the Power Macintosh requires that you
turn on Virtual Memory. Otherwise, you must load the entire program into
memory.

RESOLUTION
==========

To restart your computer with Virtual Memory turned on, follow these steps:

1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels.

2. Double-click the Memory control panel.

3. In the Virtual Memory section, choose On.

4. Verify that the After Restart section shows at least 12 megabytes. If
   necessary, increase this size by clicking the up arrow.

    NOTE: Apple suggests that you increase Virtual Memory to no more than
    twice the built-in RAM.

5. Close all windows, and from the Special menu, choose Restart.

MORE INFORMATION
================

In the case of Works 4.0, if Virtual Memory is turned off, the amount of
available memory that Works requires increases from 2300K to 7071K.
