The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, version 4.0, 4.0a, and 4.0b
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

If you receive the error message

   There is no translator available to import the file <filename>

when you try to open a Microsoft Excel 4.0 file in Works 4.0, the file may
have been saved in a Workbook format as opposed to a Worksheet format.

RESOLUTION
==========

If a file is created in Excel 4.0 or 5.0 and saved as an Excel 4.0
Workbook, the error message appears.

To open these files in Works 4.0, use the method below for your version of
Excel:

Excel 5.0
---------

Do not save the document as an Excel 4.0 Workbook. Save the document as a
Microsoft Excel Workbook. This formats it as an Excel 5.0 file. Works 4.0
will successfully open Excel 5.0 Workbook files. However, since there is
only one sheet available in Works 4.0, once you complete the conversion,
the sheets from Excel are below one another on the Works Spreadsheet page.

Excel 4.0
---------

If the Excel document actually contains multiple spreadsheets, each sheet
needs to be copied to a new, blank spreadsheet in Excel, and then saved in
an Excel 3.0 or SYLK format.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Page 605 of the "Microsoft Works User's Guide" states that Works can open
Microsoft Excel 4.0 documents. However, if a file is created in Excel 5.0
and saved as an Excel 4.0 Workbook, you receive the error message listed at
the top of this article.

The Workbook format allows multiple spreadsheets per individual document.
Works does not have this option; it needs each sheet to be an
individual spreadsheet.

If the Excel document actually contains multiple spreadsheets, each sheet
needs to be copied to a new, blank spreadsheet in Excel, and saved as a
new document prior to saving it in the Excel 4.0 Worksheet format.
