SYMPTOMS
========

In Microsoft Project, when you use the Bar Styles dialog box to modify bars
on a calendar, if you enter "CompleteThrough" or "Negative Slack" in the
Field(s) box, you do not receive an error message when you close the Bar
Styles dialog box; however, these fields are not used with the task type
that you specify.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior occurs because the fields "CompleteThrough" and "Negative
Slack" are not valid fields to use in the Bar Styles dialog box for a
Calendar. If you enter either of these field names for a bar in this dialog
box, you do not receive an error message; however, the field name is not
accepted. When you display the Bar Styles dialog box again and select the
task type that you modified, the Field(s) that were previously displayed
for this task type appear in the Field(s) box.

Note that the CompleteThrough and Negative Slack fields are valid fields to
use in the Bar Styles dialog box for the Gantt Chart.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
================

When you view your project in the Calendar, you can use the Bar Styles
dialog box to specify the type, pattern, color, text, and other options for
bars in a task category. In the Field(s) box in the Bar Styles dialog box
for a Calendar, you can enter the field whose text you want to be displayed
with the bars. Normally, if you enter an invalid field name in the Field(s)
box in the Bar Styles dialog box, you receive the following error message

   The field '<fieldname>' does not exist

where <fieldname> is the name you entered in the Field(s) box.

However, if you enter the field "CompleteThrough" or "Negative Slack"
in this dialog box, you do not receive an error message, even though
the field is not valid for this dialog box. Additionally, the
Field(s) value for the task type you modified returns to the previous
value.

Note that the Bar Styles dialog box is also available for the Gantt
Chart and Resource Graph; however, each view uses a dialog box with
options specific to that view.
