The information in this article applies to:
 - Microsoft Windows, version 3.x
 - Microsoft Explorapedia series:
      World of Nature for Windows, version 1.0
 - Microsoft How the Leopard Got His Spots, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS
========

After you install the programs listed at the top of this article on a
machine running Windows 3.x, Setup prompts you to restart Windows. It
attempts to restart Windows, then the computer returns to MS-DOS.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve the problem, use the following steps:

1. At the MS-DOS prompt, type "CD WINDOWS" (without quotation marks).

2. Type "WIN /S" (without quotation marks). This runs Windows in Standard
   mode.

3. In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.

4. In the Command Line box, type "sysedit" (without the quotation marks)
   and choose OK.

5. Look at the SYSTEM.INI file and scroll down to the [386Enh]
   section. In this section, look for two lines referencing the same
   file: DVA.386. It may look something like this:

      [386Enh]
      device=dva.386
      device=
      device=
      .
      .
      .
      device=c:\windows\system\dva.386

6. Remove the line that has the entire path statement (in this
   example, device=c:\windows\system\dva.386) and save the changes
   to the SYSTEM.INI file. Exit the System Configuration Editor.

7. Restart Windows. Windows should run in Enhanced mode now.

After following these steps, you should be able to successfully run the
programs listed at the top of this article.
