The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works versions 4.0, 4.5, 4.5a for Windows 95
 - Microsoft Works versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.0b for Windows
 - Microsoft Works versions 1.x, 2.0, 3.0 for MS-DOS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you open a Works for MS-DOS Communications document (.WCM) in Works
for Windows, you receive the following message:

   This is a Works for DOS file.

   This file was created by Microsoft Works for DOS. Some information may
   be lost when it is opened.

In Works 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a, only the second message appears.

CAUSE
=====

When you convert a Communications document, certain settings saved in the
MS-DOS document may not transfer to the Windows version. These settings
include the Protocol (for example, XModem/CRC and Ymodem) and Terminal
emulation modes (for example, ANSI and VT-52).

RESOLUTION
==========

You can reset the settings in the Works for Windows Communications document
by doing the following:

Transfer Protocol
-----------------

1. From the Settings menu, choose Transfer.

2. Select the appropriate Transfer Protocol. Choose OK.

Terminal Emulation
------------------

1. From the Settings menu, choose Terminal.

2. Select the appropriate Terminal Emulation from the list, and choose OK.

Other settings -- such as Baud Rate up to 9,600 bps, Phone Numbers, COM
port, Connect options (Redial and Dial Once), Data/Stop/Parity bits,
Recorded Scripts (maximum 60K in size) and Handshaking (XON-XOFF or
Hardware) -- should import and work correctly in Works for Windows.

NOTE: The Mask Parity option in the MS-DOS version is not converted when
opened in the Windows version. To set the equivalent option in Works for
Windows 3.0, choose Communication from the Settings menu, then select
the Ignore Parity option. There is no equivalent option in Works 4.x.
You may need to set the parity to None in the Connections tab. This is
located in the Modem Properties dialog box in the Windows 95 Control Panel.

MORE INFORMATION
================

After you import a Works for MS-DOS 1.0 or 1.05 communications file into
Works 3.0 for Windows, an additional problem may occur when you try to
switch to a different tab in the Settings dialog box.

For example, when you try to switch from the Transfer tab to the Phone tab,
the tab doesn't change and the following message appears:

   Redial count must be between 3 and 120

Also, if you are in the Phone Settings dialog box, choosing OK does not
remove the dialog remains on the screen.

To correct the problem, do the following:

1. If the Settings dialog box is showing, choose Cancel.

2. From the Settings menu, choose Phone.

3. In the Connect option box, select Redial.

4. In the Redial attempts and Redial delay boxes type a number greater than
   two. Choose OK.
