SYMPTOMS
========

The modem speed at which you connect to another computer or an online
service is lower than the speed supported by your modem and the access
number you dialed.

For example, you connect to The Microsoft Network at 9600 bps even though
your modem and the access number supports a 14,400-bps connection.

CAUSE
=====

This problem can occur if the Bits Per Second setting for the communication
(COM) port you are using is set too low. For example, if you have a 14,400-
bps modem but the COM port's Bits Per Second setting is set to 9600, you
can connect at a maximum speed of 9600 bps.

RESOLUTION
==========

To change the COM port's Bits Per Second setting, follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click the System icon.

3. Click the Device Manager tab.

4. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).

5. Click the COM port your modem is using.

6. Click the Properties button.

7. Click the Port Settings tab.

8. In the Bits Per Second box, click a setting that equals or exceeds
   the carrier rate your modem uses. In general, the 19200 setting works
   for most computer (although you can probably use the 57600 setting).

9. Click OK until you return to Control Panel.
