The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Macintosh, version 5.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

Annotations inserted in a Word version 6.0 or later document become
corrupted when you save the document in "Word for Macintosh 5.1" format and
then open the document in Word 5.1 for the Macintosh.

When you open the document in Word 5.1, the annotations appear with the
correct annotation icons but are followed by "garbage" characters.

CAUSE
=====

The problem occurs when both the following conditions are true:

 - The annotation is inserted into a Word 6.x document when the document
   is protected for revisions.

    -and-

 - The Word 6.x document is saved in "Word for Macintosh 5.1" format.

WORKAROUND
==========

To open a Word 6.x document that contains an annotation as a revision into
Word 5.1 for the Macintosh, use the "Word 6.0 for Windows&Macintosh"
converter. The converter allows Word 5.1 to open Word 6.x documents and
bypasses the need to save the document into the Word 5.1 format from Word
6.x. If you are using Word 98 Macintosh Edition, use the Word 97-98
converter.
