SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you attempt to open a document with Microsoft Works, you may receive
the following message:
 
   The application Microsoft Works 4.0 has unexpectedly quit
   because an error of type -39 occurred.
 
CAUSE
=====
 
This error message may occur if there is a damaged copy of Works on the
hard drive in addition to a working copy. When your computer attempts to
load the damaged version of Works, the error message occurs.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
Use the steps below to remove damaged copies of Works:
 
1. Search the hard drive for a duplicate Works program. Delete it,
   along with the Works 4.0 Preferences file in the Preferences
   folder.
 
   Try to open the file again with Works. If the error message continues,
   try step two.
 
2. Remove all Microsoft Works program files from the hard disk drive, and
   re-install it from the original floppy disks.
 
   Try to open the file again with Works. If the error message continues,
   try step three.
 
   -or-
 
3. Try the following solutions one at a time. Try to start Works between
   solutions. If the error message continues, try the next solution.
 
    - Rebuild the Desktop File:
 
      Restart the machine while you press and hold down the COMMAND and
      OPTION keys. When you receive the message to rebuild the desktop,
      release the keys and choose OK.
 
      -or-
 
    - Isolate the System, Finder, Enabler and Microsoft OLE Extension using
      the following steps:
 
      If You Are Running System 7.5 or Later
      --------------------------------------
 
      1. Press and hold down the SPACEBAR while you restart the computer.
         This starts Extensions Manager.
 
      2. In the Sets area, choose All Off.
 
      3. Click on Microsoft OLE Extension. A check mark appears. Close the
         box.
 
      If You Are Running a System Earlier than 7.5
      --------------------------------------------
 
      1. Create a new folder on your hard drive and name it TEST.
 
      2. Open the system folder and move the following items to the TEST
         folder:
 
          - System
 
          - Finder
 
          - Enabler(s)
 
          - Microsoft OLE Extension (located in the Extensions folder)
 
      3. Close all open windows and restart the machine.
 
      4. Open the TEST folder.
 
      5. Drag Microsoft OLE Extension into the Extensions folder.
         Restart the machine.
