The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
 - Microsoft Video for Windows Runtime, version 1.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you run an AVI video clip in a presentation during a Slide Show, it
appears to rewind to the initial frame of the video clip.

CAUSE
=====

When you insert an AVI movie as a Media Clip in PowerPoint, Media Player
will automatically place a picture of the first frame on the screen. This
is called the poster image of the Media Clip object. This poster is not the
actual AVI file, it is only a placeholder on the screen. When the video
clip is played in the Slide Show, the actual AVI plays on top of the
placeholder image. When the clip ends, the AVI file is closed, and the
placeholder image is displayed again.

NOTE: This only occurs if the Play In Client Document option is selected in
Media Player's Edit Options dialog box. If Play In Client Document is not
selected, the AVI movie plays in its own window; you can see the poster
image in the background while the movie is playing.

STATUS
======

This behavior is by design and is not a problem with PowerPoint or Video
for Windows.

RESOLUTION
==========

If you do not want it to look like your AVI file automatically rewinds, you
can use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Start and Stop with the Same Image
--------------------------------------------

Have the AVI clip start and stop with the same image. This can be done by
inserting a title frame or a black frame at the beginning and end of the
video clip. To do this, you must have video editing software.

Method 2: Hide Poster Image During Slide Show
---------------------------------------------

If you don't have video editing software, you can hide the poster image
during the Slide Show by doing the following. The AVI file will only
appear while it is playing.

1. Select the AVI clip on the slide.

2. From the Tools menu, choose Play Settings.

3. Clear the Hide While Not Playing check box.

4. Choose OK.

The poster image will still be on the screen while you are editing your
PowerPoint presentation, but it will disappear as soon as you run the
Slide Show.
