SYMPTOMS
========

If, after installing Windows 95 from a network server, you try to install
a new network component while you do not have access to the network and
are forced to cancel the installation, the network component may appear
to be installed correctly after you restart your computer. However, the
component is not functional, and you may receive error messages when
Windows 95 starts, as Windows 95 tries to load drivers that are not
present.

CAUSE
=====

When you install a new network component, the registry is updated before
new files are copied. Therefore, if you cancel the process for any reason,
the registry entries for that network component remain in the registry,
even though the files that are associated with that component are not
installed. This causes the component to appear to be installed when you
view Network properties even though it cannot actually be used, and may
cause other problems depending on which network component you attempted to
install.

RESOLUTION
==========

To correct this problem, use either of the following methods:

 - If the Windows 95 files are available in another location (such as
   on a Windows 95 CD-ROM or on Windows 95 disks), install the network
   component from that location.

 - If the Windows 95 files are not available in another location, remove
   the network component until you can access the network files correctly.
   To remove a network component, follow these steps:

   1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control
      Panel.

   2. Double-click the Network icon.

   3. Click the component you want to remove, then click Remove.

NOTE: If you cannot start Windows 95 because of this problem, start Windows
95 in Safe mode and then use one of the above resolutions. To start Windows
95 in Safe mode, restart your computer, and then when you see the "Starting
Windows 95" message, press the F5 key.
