SYMPTOMS
========

When you open a WordPerfect 5.x for MS-DOS or Windows document containing
long citations into Microsoft Word, an unintelligible string, such as an
accented letter "O" (without the quotation marks) and several underscores,
results.

NOTE: This problem does not occur when opening WordPerfect documents into
Word for Windows NT.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs because the WordPerfect converter applies an invalid
text argument for the \l long citation field switch.

WORKAROUND
==========

After you convert the document, reinsert the long citation text, enclosed
within quotation marks, following the \l switch in the {TA} field.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the WordPerfect converter
supplied with the Word versions referenced at the beginning of this
article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here
