The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, 6.0.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you convert documents containing black-and-white graphics from Word
6.0, 6.0a, or 6.0c for Windows or Word 6.0 for Windows NT to Word 5.0, 5.1,
6.0, or 6.0.1 for the Macintosh, one of the following may result:

 - Images appear sparsely dithered, and some text or other content is not
   displayed or printed.

 - Images display correctly in normal view, print preview, and page layout
   view but print with reverse (inverted) shading to PostScript printers.
   The white portions of the graphic become black, and the black portions
   become white.

This problem occurs when printing the converted documents to PostScript
printers using the LaserWriter 7.x or 8.x series printer driver. The
problem does not occur when printing to QuickDraw printers, or when using
the QuickDraw GX LaserWriter driver.

CAUSE
=====

This problem appears to be a problem with the Windows Metafile
converter supplied with the Word for the Macintosh product versions
referenced above.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Method 1: Install QuickDraw GX, the new printing architecture included with
          Apple Macintosh System 7.5 or later, and use the LaserWriter GX
          driver. Steps to set up the LaserWriter GX driver once QuickDraw
          GX has been installed are as follows:

          a. On the Apple menu, select the Chooser.

          b. Click the LaserWriter GX driver.

          c. In the Connect Via list, select the method of communication
             with the printer.

          d. Below the Connect Via list, select the printer you will be
             using.

          e. Click the Create button. (A GX print driver icon will
             appear on the Desktop.)

          f. Close the Chooser.

Method 2: Turn on the "Black and White" option instead of "Color/Grayscale"
          in the Print Options dialog box of the LaserWriter series 7.x and
          8.x printer drivers. The black and white portions will print
          correctly; however, gray or white-text-on-black portions of the
          graphic will not print.

Method 3: If possible, print to a QuickDraw printer.

Method 4: Double-click each affected graphic to start Word's Picture
          Editor. This corrects the inversion problem when printing;
          however, it reduces the number of detail and colors in the
          graphic. The printed output resulting from this workaround is
          usually acceptable for less-detailed graphics.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Black-and-white bitmap graphics (for example, captures of Windows dialog
boxes) that are created with a screen-capture program consistently print
with reversed (inverted) shading after conversion to Word for the
Macintosh.

Note that any printer that uses the LaserWriter 7.x or 8.x series driver
supports the PostScript language. The following are commonly used
