SYMPTOMS
========

When you start Microsoft Exchange, you may experience one of the following
problems:

 - Microsoft Exchange stops responding (hangs).

 - Microsoft Exchange generates a fault in Mapisp32.

CAUSE
=====

These errors can occur when there is a message in the Outbox that is
damaged or has a damaged address. When Microsoft Exchange starts, the MAPI
spooler opens the Outbox and tries to send the damaged message. If
Microsoft Exchange shuts down before the message is sent, the message
remains in the Outbox, generating a loop. The message cannot be retrieved
once the spooler has tried to send it.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1
--------

You can use this method if the mail service is Microsoft Mail:

 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.

 2. Double-click the Mail And Fax icon.

 3. On the Delivery tab, click the Enable Outgoing Mail Delivery and
    Enable Incoming Mail Delivery check boxes to clear them.

 6. Click OK twice and close Control Panel.

 7. Double-click the Inbox icon on the desktop to start Microsoft
    Exchange.

 8. Open the Outbox and delete the damaged message or drag it to the
    Inbox.

 9. Create a new message to send and then close Microsoft Exchange.

10. In Control Panel, double-click the Mail And Fax icon.

11. On the Delivery tab, click the Enable Outgoing Mail Delivery and
    Enable Incoming Mail Delivery check boxes to select them.

12. Click OK twice.

13. Start Microsoft Exchange again.

Method 2
--------

You can use this method with any mail service:

 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.

 2. Double-click the Mail And Fax icon, then click Show Profiles.

 3. Click Manual and then click Next.

 4. Name the profile.

 5. Click Add, then click Personal Folders.

 6. Enter the location for the .pst file. The default location is:

       C:\Exchange\Mailbox.pst

 7. Click OK twice, then click Next, then click Finish.

 8. In the "When starting Microsoft Exchange, use this profile" box,
    click the new profile.

 9. Start Microsoft Exchange. You should receive an error message
    stating that the mail is undeliverable because no transport
    provider is available for delivery to the recipient.

10. Exit Microsoft Exchange.

11. Reset the profiles and then start Microsoft Exchange again.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The steps in this article should help you correct messages that are stuck
in the Personal Information Store. If the problem is due to incoming mail
from the post office, contact your mail administrator. When this occurs you
can still send mail using the Remote Preview feature.
