The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c

SUMMARY
=======

There is a line in the Powerpnt.ini file used by PowerPoint for Windows,
versions 3.0 and 4.0, that reads:

   TemplateDir=<path>

You can edit this line to point to a network location if you want to have
PowerPoint look in that network location by default to find its templates.
However, you must use a drive letter instead of a UNC path. For example,
you can use

   TemplateDir=F:\Powerpnt\Template

but not:

   TemplateDir=\\Server\Share\Powerpnt\Template

If you use a UNC designation for the TemplateDir= line, PowerPoint will
ignore this line and look in the Windows directory for templates by
default.

This happens both with PowerPoint installed as a standalone program
and PowerPoint installed as part of Microsoft Office.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Usually, network users can refer to a network resource by its UNC name
(typically in the form \\<SERVER>\<SHARE> for Microsoft networks) without
associating that connection with a drive letter.

However, for PowerPoint to access a shared template directory on a network
server, you have to use a persistent connection to the server that contains
the templates, and modify your Powerpnt.ini file so it uses the persistent
drive letter instead of the UNC connection.
