The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to start PowerPoint version 7.0 or an OLE application, such as
Microsoft Graph or Microsoft ClipArt Gallery, the program may not start as
expected.

In addition, you may receive one of a variety of low-memory errors, a
general protection fault (GP fault), or the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
   shut down.

CAUSE
=====

This problem can occur if your computer has insufficient physical or
virtual memory to start the program.

RESOLUTION
==========

There are several steps you can take to resolve low-memory
related issues.

Without installing more physical memory (RAM) on your computer, you must
make sure that Virtual Memory is turned on and that there is enough disk
space available for it to work.

Virtual Memory is a method of using hard drive space to simulate RAM. If
your hard drive is full, Virtual Memory may not work.

To make sure that Virtual Memory is enabled:

1. Go to your System Properties. You can do this by right-clicking My
   Computer and then clicking Properties.

2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Virtual Memory.

3. Be sure the "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings" option is
   selected, and then click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, try to free up hard disk space.
You can do this in several ways:

1. Delete any unwanted or unneeded documents or programs.

2. Compress your hard disk using a disk-compression technology such as
   Microsoft DriveSpace.

3. Empty the Recycle Bin.

The Microsoft PLUS! Pack for Windows 95 installs an advanced
disk-compression technology called DriveSpace 3. For more
information on this, do the following:

1. Make sure you have installed the PLUS! Pack for Windows 95.

2. On the Start menu, click Help.

3. Click the Index tab.

4. Type the following in the first text box:

      DriveSpace 3

5. In the third list box, click the topic you'd like to read, and then
   click Display.
