SYMPTOMS
========

Direct Cable Connection fails when one or both computers are using only the
NetBEUI protocol with the Dial-Up Adapter and are located on the same
network.

On the computer configured as the guest, the Direct Cable Connection Status
dialog box displays the message "Verifying Username and Password," and then
"Disconnect."

On the host computer, the Direct Cable Connection Status dialog box
displays the message "Verifying Username and Password," and then "Waiting
for the guest machine."

CAUSE
=====

The network card adapter and the Dial-Up Adapter are using the same NetBIOS
name. Therefore, NetBEUI fails to negotiate a connection, and because it is
the only network protocol bound to the Dial-Up Adapter, the connection is
terminated.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this behavior, disconnect the guest computer from the
network.

-or-

Access the shared resources through the network rather than through Direct
Cable Connection.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Because NetBEUI requires a unique name to identify each computer, it is not
possible to have a computer connected to the same network using the same
name on two different network adapters. Conversely, TCP/IP and IPX
protocols rely on having a unique network ID rather than on having a unique
network name, and therefore connections are negotiated regardless of a
naming conflict.

NOTE: To access NetBIOS resources through Direct Cable Connection, you must
have a NetBIOS protocol bound to the Dial-Up Adapter.
